NBA: Pacers top Pistons, rookie Bennedict Mathurin scores 27

Rookie Bennedict Mathurin had 27 points and seven rebounds as the Indiana Pacers collected their first win of the season by beating the Detroit Pistons 124-115 on Saturday.

Tyrese Haliburton contributed 24 points, 10 assists and five steals, while Jalen Smith had 19 points and 15 rebounds for Indiana. Goga Bitadze provided 14 points, 15 rebounds and four assists. Isaiah Jackson scored 8 points, 5 rebounds and 5 of the Pacers’ 15 saves.

Cade Cunningham led the Pistons with 22 points, four rebounds and four assists. Saddiq Bey hit 20 points and won 11 rebounds. Jaden Ivey had 17 points, 11 rebounds and 5 assists, Bojan Bogdanovic scored 16 and Isaiah Stewart added 11 points.

The Pacers shot 43.7% long and made 38.1% of their 3-pointers. The Pistons were held to 38.9% of shots despite making 42.9% of their 3-point attempts. Indiana’s bench outperformed Detroit’s bench by a score of 60-29.

Both teams played their third game in four nights. The Pistons were up 10 points after the first half and led 56-52 at halftime. Cunningham leads Detroit with 10 points, while Haliburton tops Indiana with the same number of points despite taking just 2 of 10 shots.

Both teams struggled on the pitch, with the Pistons making 36% of the goals and the Pacers taking 34.5%.

The Pacers cleared the deficit in the third inning. A Bitadze wait with 4:58 left in the quarter gave Indiana a 75-67 lead. Mathurin took three points just over three minutes later with an 83-73 advantage. After Isaiah Livers hit the third, Mathurin hit another before halftime. Indiana led 88-79 in the fourth inning.

Cunningham hit a 3-pointer with 8:58 left to cut the Pacers’ advantage to six, 94-88. Mathurin made a mid-quarter shift to hit 102-93.

Mathurin’s remaining 3 points gave Indiana a 108-97 lead. The Pacers maintained the lead with the assistance of two Haliburton pointers.
