The Dallas Mavericks are planning to file a formal protest with the NBA after the referee’s false claims late in the third half resulted in a 127-125 loss to the Golden State Warriors on Wednesday night, The Athletic reports.

The referees allegedly changed the call without notifying the Dallas bench, causing the Mavericks to misplace the floor during a game in the first leg of Golden State. The blunder allowed Warriors center back Kevon Looney to hit a pitch from wide range, giving Golden State a 90-87 lead with less than two minutes left in the third half.

“For those wondering about the 1:54 play that will take place on the 3rd, let me explain what happened. Referee calls the ball Mavs. The announcer announced it. Then there’s the waiting period,” Dallas owner Mark Cuban said in a tweet.

“In the meantime, the official changed the call and never told us. Then when they saw us lined up like it was our ball, he just gave the ball to the warriors.

“Never said a word to us. They have an easy basketball. It’s crazy that it would matter in a 2 point game. The worst possible executive mistake in NBA history. All they had to do was tell us and they didn’t.”

This isn’t the first time Cuban has resorted to a protest, as he also filed a protest following a 111-107 loss to the Atlanta Hawks on February 22, 2020.

Sean Wright, Michael Smith and Andy Nagy are the organizers of the contest.
