NBA: LeBron James posts 38 points, triple-double as Lakers beat Cavs

LeBron James exploded with a game-high 38 along with 11 rebounds and 12 assists to help the Los Angeles Lakers win 131-120 over the Cleveland Cavaliers on Monday.

James, who played for the Cavs for 11 seasons, was 17th out of 29 appearances. He entered Monday’s game in second place in the league with a scoring rate of 29.8 per game in a virtual trilogy against Philadelphia Joel Embiid and Milwaukee’s Giannis Antetokounmpo.

The Lakers finished 2-2 on their four-game long road trip.

Russell Westbrook contributed 20 points and 11 assists for the Lakers, while DJ Augustin had 20 points from the bench. Augustin didn’t miss a shot (7/7) or 3 points (6/6), as the Lakers have shot 56.4% from the field the most of the season.

Defender Darius Garland was incredible with 29 points and 16 assists in the game for the Cavs, who led 3-2 in a game that just ended in his home country of five. Garland has scored 20 or more points in 14 of his last 15 games.

Malik Monk and Stanley Johnson each scored 12 points while Austin Reaves had 11 points, six assists and five rebounds.

Cleveland’s five starting games have all scored double figures, as Lauri Markkanen added 18 points and 9 rebounds and Lamar Stevens 16 points. Evan Mobley and substitute Caris LeVert each got 13 points while Isaac Okoro got 12 points.

Stevens’ reverse strike with 5.5 seconds on the left gives Cleveland a 97-96 lead after three quarters. However, the Lakers left the Cavaliers in their dust in the fourth game.

Mobley accidentally kicked James in the chin during about 10:41 in the first half. That seemed to light the fire under James.

James had 21 points to give the Lakers a 67-62 advantage at halftime. The Lakers overtake Cleveland in the second quarter, 39-27. Augustin has 17 points in the first half and is 5/5 away from the 3-point line.

Garland had 17 points and five assists in the first half for the Cavs.

Carmelo Anthony’s basic jump with 7:06 left in the first half helped the Lakers regain the lead, 46-45, after starting the game 6-0 only to fall behind at most. 14 in the first inning.

Markkanen’s 3-pointer overcame the Cavs 12-1, giving them a 12-7 lead with 7:17 left in opening time. Cleveland’s score soon rose to 31-11.

Augustin came on from the bench and scored 11 points to help the Lakers continue to play and were only 7 points behind after one half, a score of 35-28. Garland had seven points and four assists for the Cavs.
