Whether the Dallas Mavericks’ bold move to get Kyrie Irving pays off in a deep playoff will be one of the more compelling stories throughout the NBA season, but this blockbuster deal already has immediate impact on bettors.
The Mavericks are 28-26 and benched in the play-in while star Luka Doncic treats a heel injury. However, shortly after the news of the Irving deal reportedly broke on Sunday, their NBA title odds were halved by DraftKings.
A +3000 long shot to win the NBA championship starting Sunday, Dallas currently has eighth shortest odds of +1500. The Mavericks are also eighth at BetMGM, where they have even shorter title odds at +1200.
The Mavericks also moved from +1300 to win the Western Conference to +700 at DraftKings, behind only the Denver Nuggets (+340), Los Angeles Clippers (+380), Memphis Grizzlies (+475) and Golden State Warriors (+650 ).
Irving asked to be traded on Friday, and two days later, the Mavericks were able to execute the deal before the Thursday deadline.
The Nets will receive guard Spencer Dinwiddie, forward Dorian Finney-Smith, an unprotected 2029 first-round pick, a 2027 second-round pick and a 2029 second-round pick, according to The Athletic. The Mavericks will also get striker Markieff Morris in the deal.
The odds on Brooklyn’s future took a significant hit when Irving left town. Despite finishing fourth in the Eastern Conference with 32-20, the Nets went from +320 to win the conference to +650 and their NBA title odds stretched from +1500 to +2000 .
The Clippers, Phoenix Suns and Los Angeles Lakers are also said to be racing to get Irving, the eight-time All-Star, who teamed up with LeBron James to bring home the NBA championship for Cleveland with the Cavaliers in 2016.
The Lakers have been named by SportsBetting.ag as the earliest favorites to get Irving on Friday, but their Western Conference odds are currently +1500 while their title odds are +3500 at DraftKings.
