NBA: Joel Embiid scores 42, powers 76ers past Hawks
Joel Embiid scored a season-high 42 and picked up 10 rebounds as the Philadelphia 76ers withstood a second-half strike by the Atlanta Hawks to a 121-109 win on Saturday.
Tyrese Maxey has 26 points and 9 assists, Tobias Harris has 21 and Shake Milton has 11 for Philadelphia, avenging the 104-95 loss to the Hawks on Thursday in Atlanta.
Trae Young led the Hawks with 27 points and 11 assists, while Dejounte Murray scored 23, DeAndre Hunter had 15 and Clint Capela scored 14 points and 15 rebounds.
Atlanta stretched to 27 points midway through the third quarter before closing on October 22 to cut the deficit to 99-84.
The Hawks continued their momentum into round 4 and pulled in 113-107 on AJ Griffin’s 3rd pointer with 2:28 left.
Philadelphia quickly regained control with 5 points in a row, including Matisse Thybulle’s 1:39 goal to steal the ball.
Embiid set the tone early with a dominating first half, scoring 14 points with four rebounds and three assists to give the Sixers a 37-24 lead.

Philadelphia maintained its double-digit lead throughout the second quarter and took a 53-35 lead thanks to a Maxey goal with 6:36 remaining in the second half.
Maxey has come out of a slight slump after shooting 29.7% from the field in his last three games. The third year’s point guard was 10 out of 18 games against Atlanta, including 3 out of 5 from the 3-point range.
Philadelphia leads 67-51 after shooting 56.8% from the field. Embiid had 18 points in the half to lead all scorers.
Six-man defender De’Anthony Melton missed the game with a back injury, while reserve defender Furkan Korkmaz scored seven points before leaving the field in the second half with a left knee injury.
Embiid finished with six assists and two saves in 40 minutes while shooting 14 of 25 from the field and 13 of 16 from the foul line.
Atlanta forward Onyeka Okongwu, who scored a brace in Thursday’s win over Philadelphia, missed the game for personal reasons.
