NBA: Grizzlies beat Nets as Ja Morant, Desmond Bane score 38 each

Ja Morant scored 38 points and Desmond Bane set a career high with 38 points and 8 times 3 when the Memphis Grizzlies overcame the Brooklyn Nets 134-124 on Monday.

Santi Aldama added 17 points and Brandon Clarke had 13 for Memphis, scoring a seventh straight win over the Nets.

Brooklyn lost despite stellar performances from Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving, who had 37 points each.

Durant, who hit 14 for 20 from the field, overtook Alex English (25,613 points) to place 20th on the NBA’s all-time scoring list. Durant ended the night with 25,622 points.

Irving had eight rebounds and five assists while Nic Claxton scored 16 points and seven rebounds for Brooklyn, leading 119-109 with seven minutes left.

After failing to score in the third inning, Irving had 21 in the fourth.

Brooklyn cut the deficit to six before swinger Ben Simmons fouled with seven at the 3:52 mark.

Bane, who finished 14 out of 21 from the field and 8/11 from outside the arc, scored a quick five to give the Grizzlies a nine lead with 2:04 remaining.

The Nets pulled in the 129-122 round with 1:52 left before the Grizzlies won on Morant’s fourth pointer.

Durant scored 18 points in the first half for Brooklyn, leading 69-64 after shooting 57.4% from the field.

The opening half featured four technical fouls and impressive ball moves by the Nets, who had 19 assists on 27 shots.

The Grizzlies started the third inning 23-5 and scored a total of 45 points in this period. Bane led with 19 points for the quarter as Memphis moved ahead 109-97.

Memphis diminutive forward Dillon Brooks, who missed the team’s first three games due to pain in his left thigh, scored four points in a two-of-13 series.

Both teams scored early with a high first half. Morant scored 16 points in nine minutes to give the Grizzlies a 39-34 lead.
