NBA: Bojan Bogdanovic, young stars lead Pistons past Magic
Bojan Bogdanovic scored 24 points on his Detroit debut as the Pistons spoiled top pick Paolo Banchero’s debut by beating the Orlando Magic 113-109 in the season opener for both teams on Wednesday.
Bogdanovic, acquired in a trade with Utah, hit six 3-pointers and won five rebounds. Jaden Ivey, fifth pick in the June draft, scored 19 points, and the other lottery pick, Jalen Duren, provided 14 points and 10 rebounds on his debut.
Cade Cunningham had 18 points and 10 assists, while Isaiah Stewart contributed 14 points for Detroit.
Banchero amassed 27 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists in his first game. Jalen Suggs hit 21 points before fouling, while Franz Wagner had 20 points and five assists. Terrence Ross added 13 points and Wendell Carter Jr scored 11 points with 11 rebounds.
The Pistons shot 42.6% away and recorded 31 assists on 40 goals scored. The Magic is up 48.8% but does 18 spins.
The Magic took a 15 lead in the first half, but the Pistons bounced back with 40 points in the second half to take a 57-55 lead at halftime. The Pistons’ offensive continued into the third inning, as they overcame Magic 34-28.
Banchero hit a jumper with 7:43 left to drag Orlando within two points with a score of 95-93.

Wagner sealed the score with a long jump, but Duren responded with a tackle.
Ivey’s three points with 4:06 remaining gave Detroit a 104-99 advantage. An Ivey change led to a Banchero change with 1:21 left to drag Orlando in 106-103.
Stewart made two free throws, to which Wagner responded with a shake. Banchero’s conversion chart cut Detroit’s lead by one point, 108-107.
Cunningham then found Stewart in the corner for a 3-pointer to give Detroit some breathing room. Banchero takes two free throws with 5.5 seconds left.
Bogdanovic made two free throws to re-establish the Pistons’ four-point lead.
