The recent NBA season has been packed with some of the league’s biggest stars shining overseas and others taking their talents to new teams via trades and free agency; so you’re probably itching to play with your new squad in NBA 2K25’s Play Now mode. When you take the court in the latest iteration of the NBA 2K series on September 4, 5 a.m. PST on PS5 and PS4, experience a host of improvements across the entire NBA 2K25’s competitive gameplay modes, including Online Play Now* with the return of Tournaments, improved leaderboards and ranking systems, and more!

Whether you’re playing solo or with a friend, the classic Instant Play mode is the quickest way to get into the action and start slamming down dunks in a traditional head-to-head format. Choose from current NBA teams updated with active rosters or pay homage to basketball legends with a roster of iconic players from the past. While you’ll instantly have the best selection in Offline Instant Play, the rules are a little different in Online Instant Play.
The biggest change to Play Now Online is the return of Leagues, a five-tiered ranking system with Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, and GOAT to determine your skill level. Each player will start at Bronze and have the choice of all 30 current NBA teams, but to gain access to the expanded roster, you’ll need to level up.
- Bronze to Silver: Unlock ’60s, ’70s, ’80s and ’90s era teams
- From Silver to Gold: Unlock 2000 era teams
- Gold to Platinum: Unlock 2010 era teams
- Platinum to GOAT: Unlock a GOATED Team (new GOATED team every Season)
To move up from Bronze to Silver, etc., you’ll need to accumulate enough Victory Points by winning to move on. But there’s one thing to note: in NBA 2K25, you can only use the same team once every five games or until you reach the next League level. While it would be fun to dominate every game with the Boston Celtics, there’s more incentive to use a lower-ranked team.
Tournaments use overall rankings to group teams into three tiers to quantify how Victory Points are awarded. See below:
- Level 1 – Win with one of the top 10 ranked teams in the NBA to get the smallest number of Victory Points
- Level 2 – Win with teams ranked 11-20 overall to receive average Victory Points
- Level 3 – Win with teams ranked 21-30 overall to get the most Victory Points
The pursuit of victory is the ultimate goal in Play Now Online, but leveling up also has its own bragging rights. Players who accumulate enough points in the GOAT League will receive VC, an All-Time Team, and Prestige upon completing the GOAT League. Additionally, players who rank in the Top 100 will receive an in-game logo, visible to all players, to show off their achievements.
NBA 2K25 Online Instant Play still feels as authentic as ever, but this year it has been refreshed with significant changes to add another layer of competitive fun for you to enjoy. A simpler and cleaner user interface makes it easy to understand the new progression system at all skill levels and adds to the overall intuitive nature of Instant Play.
