Navjot Singh Sidhu To Be Released From Punjab Jail Tomorrow, Says Tweet From His Official Account

The top leader of the Punjab Parliament, Navjot Singh Sidhu, who was sentenced to a year in prison by the Supreme Court in a traffic accident that killed a man 34 years ago, will be released from Patiala Prison on tomorrow, a tweet from his official account said. PTI news agency said his lawyer HPS Varma also confirmed the development.

Mr. Varma said that according to Punjab Prison rules, a prisoner with good behavior will be granted a general amnesty.
PTI quoted him as saying: “He will most likely be released on Saturday from Patiala prison.
In May last year, the Supreme Court ordered a “severe imprisonment” of one year for the 59-year-old politician, the cricketer turned politician, who resigned as Speaker of the Punjab Parliament after his party’s defeat in the state election.
The court’s decision was based on a petition filed by the family of a man who died after a fight with Mr. Sidhu and his friend in 1988. The family has asked for a tougher sentence and reconsideration. A 2018 Supreme Court order acquitted him of murder.
On December 27, 1988, Mr. Sidhu quarreled with Gurnam Singh, 65, a resident of Patiala, over a parking space. Mr Sidhu and his friend, Rupinder Singh Sandhu, are said to have pulled Gurnam Singh out of his car and beat him. He then died in the hospital.
Mr. Sidhu was accused by a witness of killing Gurnam Singh with a blow to the head.
The Supreme Court in 2018 ordered Mr. Sidhu to pay a fine of ₹1,000 rupees for intentionally hurting a person.
However, the court, reviewing its own order, said it considered jailing Mr Sidhu “appropriate” and said “some serious crime” must be attached if a person dies.
