NavIC: All you need to know about India’s Home-Grown GPS Alternative

The Indian government is pushing smartphone makers to support their NavIC navigation system in new devices to go on sale in the country from next year, a move that has spooked the industry due to high costs. additional fees and tight timeframes.

Here are details on the birth of NavIC, why India wants smartphone manufacturers to adopt it and how the system compares to other global or regional positioning systems.

What is Navic?

NavIC, or Navigation with the Indian Constellation, is an independent independent navigation satellite system developed by the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO).

NavIC was initially approved in 2006 at a cost of $174 million (approximately Rs 1,400). Expected to be completed by the end of 2011, but not until 2018 to go into operation.

NavIC consists of eight satellites and covers the entire land of India and is up to 1,500 km (930 mi) from its boundary.

Currently, the use of NavIC is limited. It is being used in public transit tracking in India, to provide emergency warning alerts to fishermen venturing into the deep sea where there is no network connection on the ground, and to monitor and Provide disaster-related information.

Enabling it in smartphones is the next step that India is pushing.

How does NaviC compare?

The main difference is the serviceable area covered by these systems. GPS serves users around the globe and its satellites orbit the earth twice a day, while NavIC is currently being used in India and surrounding areas.

Like GPS, there are three other navigation systems with global coverage – Galileo of the European Union, GLONASS owned by Russia and Beidou of China. QZSS, operated by Japan, is another regional navigation system covering the Asia-Oceania region, with a focus on Japan.

India’s 2021 draft satellite navigation policy states the government will work towards “expanding coverage from the region to the globe” to ensure the availability of NavIC signals in any region. any area in the world.

NavIC is “as good as US GPS in terms of location accuracy”, the Indian government said in August.

Why is India promoting NavIC?

India said that NavIC was formed with the aim of eliminating dependence on foreign satellite systems for location service requirements, especially for “strategic areas”.

India says that relying on systems like GPS and GLONASS may not always be reliable as they are operated by the defense agencies of the respective countries and it is possible that the civil services have may be degraded or rejected.

“NavIC is a native navigation system under Indian control. There is no risk of service being withdrawn or denied in a given situation,” the government said in 2021.

India also wants to encourage its ministries to use NavIC applications to promote local industry participation in the development of native NavIC-based solutions.
