NATO practices air interoperability with Finland, Sweden amid Russian threats

NATO allies and their partners Finland and Sweden enjoyed a week of extensive cooperation in the skies over Estonia during the recently concluded exercise Ramstein Alloy.

Regular NATO exercises focus on real-world scenarios faced by NATO Air Policy personnel deployed in the Baltic region.

The exercises included air combat training, air refueling, and identifying and escorting a lost aircraft.

The exercise is an opportunity to jointly train and improve the operational capabilities of NATO air forces and partners. Crews and aircraft from Belgium, Czech Republic, Estonia, France, Germany, Spain, Turkey and Great Britain joined the Finnish and Swedish air forces.

Allies have the ability to interact in the air with Finland and Sweden amid growing anxiety about Russian threats. Russian President Vladimir Putin has viewed NATO expansion as a threat to Russia, and Moscow has warned both countries of serious political and military consequences if they become members.

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on 24 February sparked a wave of support for NATO membership in two traditionally unaligned Nordic countries, with polls showing a majority respondents were willing to join the alliance in Finland and NATO supporters in Sweden clearly outnumbered those who were against the idea.
