‘National Movie Day’ offers $3 movie tickets for a day

For a day, movie tickets will be as low as $3 at the vast majority of theaters in the US as part of the newly launched “National Movie Day” to lure audiences during the quiet time at the box office. .

The Motion Picture Foundation, a nonprofit branch of the National Association of Theater Owners, announced on Sunday that September 3 will be a nationwide sale day at more than 3,000 theaters and more than 30,000 screens. Main chains, including AMC and Regal Cinemas, as well as all the major studios participating. At participating theaters, tickets will be no more than $3 per show, in any format.

Labor Day weekend is traditionally one of the slowest weekends in theaters. This year, the August lull was especially acute for exhibitors. Cineworldcompany that owns Regal Cinemas, citing a meager supply of major new releases in recent plans to fill Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

If successful, however, National Film Day could flood movie theaters with audiences and potentially keep them coming back in the fall. Before each screening, ticket buyers will get to see an upcoming series from A24, Amazon Studios, Disney, Focus Features, Lionsgate, Neon, Paramount, Sony Pictures Classics, Sony, United Artists Releasing, Universal and Warner Bros.

Jackie Brenneman, President of the Film Foundation, said: “Following a record return to cinemas this summer, we wanted to do something to celebrate moviegoers. “We’re doing that by saying ‘thank you’ to the audiences who made this summer, and by providing an extra fascination for those who haven’t come back yet.”

After more than two years of the pandemic, movie theaters recovered significantly over the summer, seeing business return to near-pandemic levels. Movies like “Top Gun: Maverick,” “Minions: Rise of Gru,” “Doctor Strange in Madness’s Multiverse,” and “Jurassic World Dominion” pushed domestic summer box office sales to 3.3 billion USD as of August 21, according to data firm Comscore. That number spans 2019 total by about 20% but exhibitors have had about 30% less of the wide release this year.

National Film Day organizers describe the event as an experiment that could become an annual fixture. While several other countries have tested similar cheap movie-day tickets, the initiative is the first of its kind on such a large scale in the US.
