Coming up June 7 from Saitama, Japan, in the title fight that will be available on ESPN+, the undefeated unified IBF/WBA bantamweight champion Naoya Inoue, will face off in a rematch against the home team. WBC Nonito Donaire bantamweight champion.
The Monster and The Filipino Flash first faced each other in November 2019, in an IBF-WBA super duo unification match, which was also the final match in the World Boxing Super Series. At the end of 12 entertaining rounds, Inoue was awarded a unanimous decision to become the unified bantamweight champion. The match itself was named Match of the Year by Ring Magazine in 2019.
Since their last meeting, Inoue has successfully defended his unification title three times and Donaire has won two in a row, where he won the WBC bantamweight belt to regain part of the crown and He also successfully defended that title. Thus, this unification match will be for 3 of the 4 big belts in the 118-pound weight class. So, the two champions are 5-0 on aggregate with 5 wins in overtime since the first meeting.
The biggest challenge facing Donaire going up against his 29-year-old former conqueror is the fact that The Filipino Flash is in puberty and will turn 40 later this year. On the other hand, what is likely to make this match particularly difficult for Inoue is the fact that Donaire has nothing to lose, and his style proved challenging last time around.
