To promote mandatory insurance enforcement for public buildings across the country, the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) in Abuja established a technical committee.
The committee was established by NAICOM Insurance Commissioner Mr Mohammed Kari, and it has members from NAICOM, the Federal Fire Service (FFS) from all regions and the Nigeria Insurance Association (NIA). ).
But the steering committee includes the Commissioner for Insurance, the Comptroller of the Federal Fire Service, and the Director General of the NIA.
Speaking at the commission’s inauguration ceremony, Mr. Kari said that the committee is responsible for advising the steering committee on how to effectively and efficiently disburse public construction funds in the country.
Represented by Deputy Commissioner of Insurance, Engineering, Mr. Thomas Sunday, Kari is saddened that NAICOM, under the National Insurance Act 2003, is responsible for ensuring that public buildings and buildings under construction are protected. dangerous.
“By public buildings we mean all schools, hospitals, hotels and offices, and they have a responsibility to show proof that they have complied with Section 65 of the Act,” he said. Insurance Act 2003.
“We have a responsibility to collect, monitor and disburse funds for the purpose of improving firefighting operations in Nigeria.
“0.25% of premiums collected from public buildings are said to accrue to the fire fund. But over time, this amount has not been released because the collection process has not been done,” he said.
He said some of the funds will be used to purchase vehicles for inspection and investigation and also for publicity purposes.
The Commissioner said that about N78 million has been accumulated in funds, adding that a sample has been brought to market that would ensure proper enforcement to capture more funds.
