Witnesses claim the sub-inspector fired at Naba Kisore Das from close range as he stepped out of his car to attend an event at Gandhi Chowk in Brajarajnagar.
Officials said he was immediately taken to hospital and his condition was said to be critical, adding that arrangements were being made to transport him to Bhubaneswar for “treatment better treatment”.
One video shows the minister bleeding from his chest as he was taken to the hospital by car. “When the minister arrived at the event, a huge crowd gathered to greet him. Suddenly, a gunshot was heard and a policeman was seen running away after opening fire on Mr. Das,” said one. witnesses told NDTV.
Police said sub-inspector Gopal Das, who shot the minister, has been arrested and an investigation is underway. The motive behind the attack is still unknown.
Odisha Minister Naveen Patnaik strongly condemned the attack and wished Naba Kisore Das a speedy recovery. “The crime branch has been directed to conduct an investigation,” he was quoted as saying by the ANI news agency.
