My favorite auto-battler has a big new expansion

The game I play most often is the free auto battle game Super automatic pet. A lap or two on my PC at lunch, a couple of battles on my phone on the sofa after work, maybe a bump on the bus if I don’t have anything interesting to read. Lovely game. Now it’s all new and confusing with the launch of the latest paid expansion today, adding a whole new line of pets to recruit. The Gold Pack here is another interesting escalation in complexity over the life of the game, a pack intended for professional pet players.

Now priced at $10.00/£8.39 through the PC in-game store, the Gold Pack adds 63 pets and 13 new power-ups. It’s a tough game that focuses more on smart builds, careful placement, and temporary spells than immediately rushing into massive stats boosts.

For starters, the new pack introduces a new battle resource, the Trumpet. Various pets have the ability to create Trumpets (usually due to damage or fainting) then other pets have the ability to use them. You’ll probably use the Trumpet to damage and nerf enemies or to power up allies. If nothing else, Trumpets are used to summon a golden retriever as the last ditch guardian. A clever Trumpet build might not look immediately statistically impressive, but then continues to dazzle you with monstrous combos.

New pets are also more likely to focus on the faint effect, or carefully arrange your squad, or run the shop, or do clever things with food, or… there’s a lot Small things to learn. I’ve only seen a handful of new features in the public beta, so I’d love to learn all of these lessons the right way.

$10 feels cheap considering the amount of Super Auto Pets I play with and how generous the free base version is. And just like the SAP expansion, you’ll sometimes get to play with new pets and foods even if you don’t buy them. Now they’re in the pool to be picked for the Weekly Bundle, a free mode that picks up a new pick from all sets every Monday, a brand new meta to explore and master each week. A few new ones are out there right now.

The expansion also reworks the health system, adding a new progression system with new cosmetics to unlock (including a new entrance animation) and fiddling with other puzzle pieces.

Automatic Super Pet Available On steam as well as Android and Apple pocket phones. The expansion is PC-only right now, with mobile versions to follow. I suppose buying the expansion on PC again will get you on mobile as well.
