Murphy opens up about ‘many bugs’ after winner returns

Oisin Murphy won his return to racing at Chelmsford on Thursday night, he later described his actions leading to a 14-month ban on alcohol and Covid violations as “silly” and admitted “very , lots of errors”.

The three-time champion rode only one card, the Jupiter Express coached by Mick Appleby, and after teaming up with that horse to win, he shared about his time away from the saddle.

He told Racing TV of his behavior that led to the hefty ban, “Actually, very silly. I made a lot of mistakes that I wish I hadn’t made. I had some time to think about that and come back with a different thought. Hopefully in the next year and the years to come, I can prove to be the person I want to be.”

Murphy credits the support of Andrew Balding stables and the Qatar Racing team as being of great help during his suspension.

He said, “It’s unbelievable. When you start listing people, you’re going to eliminate someone. From my family to the Baldings family and all of the Qatar Racing team, I have never felt left out.

“Obviously I focused mainly on the first few months [of the ban] about me is sober and good. But since then I feel really good and I have been able to do that for a long time and this is where I want to start my riding career again. There is a lot to look forward to.”

Murphy hasn’t ridden a horse in public since November 2021 but showed no signs of getting tired of driving the quirky but capable Jupiter Express owned by the Horse Watchers to a narrow 15-inch win 8.
