Mumbai Police seat belt rule: Why is it postponed?
The postponement of the rear seat belt regulation until 11/11 was announced by Mumbai Police Deputy Traffic Commissioner Raj Tilak Roushan. This was done to give enough time to sensitize commuters to the rule before strict enforcement. During this time, Mumbai Traffic Police will raise awareness of the law through social media and radio. Once done, seat belt violations will be penalized by e-challans, in line with the Motor Vehicles Act, which states that failure to wear seat belts can result in fines. In Mumbai, seat belts are currently mandatory only for the driver and front passenger.
The Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, has issued a draft notice In early September, detailed regulations on fines for not wearing seat belts behind passenger cars. Gadkari released her statement days after former Tata Motors and Tata Sons president Cyrus Mistry tragically killed in a road accident.
