Multiple people were killed in a shooting late Saturday in Monterey Park, Calif., just east of Los Angeles.
Many details about the attack are still unclear. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department described it as a “mass shooting,” without specifying the number of victims. Video from the scene showed multiple ambulances surrounding the area.
The shooting happened in an area earlier in the day that had hosted the Lunar New Year Festival on the eve of the Lunar New Year. Previous festivals have attracted tens of thousands of people. The Monterey Park government website says the event, on Garvey Avenue, “has vendors offering unique gifts and specialty items, food stalls with a wide variety of delectable items, games and entertainment, and a variety of programs.” live entertainment.”
Monterey Park, with a population of about 60,000, is about 65% Asian-American and 27% Hispanic or Latino, according to government data.
