Mulayam Singh Yadav, Zakir Hussain, KM Birla Among 106 Padma Award Recipients

Mulayam Singh Yadav, Zakir Hussain, KM Birla and Sudha Murty are among 106 recipients of this year’s Padma Awards. The government announced the name on the eve of the 74th Republic Day.
The Padma Award – one of the country’s highest civilian awards – is awarded in three categories, Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri, for excellence in various fields and activities such as art engineering, social work, public service, science and technology, commerce and industry, medicine, literature and education, sports, civil service, etc.
Mr. Yadav, the late leader of the Samajwadi Party, was conferred the Padma Vibhushan in the public service. Mr. Hussain received the Padma Vibhushan in the field of art. Mr. Birla received the Padma Bhushan for trade and industry. Ms. Murty received the Padma Bhushan for social work.
The late investor Rakesh Jhunjhunwala, actor Raveena Tandon and Manipur BJP president Thounaojam Chaoba Singh were also honored with the Padma Award.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted his congratulations. “India appreciates their rich and diverse contributions to the nation and their efforts to elevate our growth trajectory,” he said.

Padma Vibhushan is awarded for exceptional service and excellence; Padma Bhushan for service excellence at a high level, and Padma Shri for service excellence in any field.
These awards will be presented by President Droupadi Murmu at ceremonies held at Rashtrapati Bhawan usually around March and April every year.
This year, the President approved 106 Padma Awards including 3 duo cases (in duos
case, the prize is counted as one).
The list includes six Padma Vibhushan awards, nine Padma Bhushan awards and 91 Padma Shri awards.
