Senior lawyer Mukul Rohatgi has turned down the center’s offer to return as India’s justice minister, the government’s top lawyer, the sources said.

Mukul Rohatgi, 67, resigned as Justice Minister in June 2017. KK Venugopal succeeded him.

Mr. Venugopal’s extended term ended on September 30. He served as the Center’s highest law officer for five years. The central government proposed Mukul Rohatgi to return as Attorney General and was accepted by him previously. According to sources, his second stint on the job is set to begin on October 1.

When Mr Venugopal’s first term as attorney general ended in 2020, he asked the government to release him from liability due to his age. The government asked him to continue for another term. He stayed, but only for two years.

Mukul Rohatgi, a veteran lawyer, has appeared in a number of high-profile cases in the Supreme Court as well as High Courts across the country, including the Gujarat riots, in which he represented the government.
