MSI Afterburner Developer Says Overclocking App “Probably Dead”

Original developer of graphics card MSI Afterburner overclocking utility has warned that the software is “semi-abandoned” and “probably dead”. Developer, Russian national Alexey ‘Unwinder’ Nicolaychuk, posted on Guru3D forum (good point of TechPowerUp) that due to economic sanctions against Russia following the invasion of Ukraine, MSI did not pay for his work on Afterburner for almost a year.

Nicolaychuk wrote: “I have been trying to continue to fulfill my obligations and work on the project myself for the past 11 months, but the result has been nothing but disappointment.” “I feel like I’m hitting a dead horse and wasting my energy on something that’s no longer needed for the company. Anyway, I’ll try to continue to support myself when I have some free time, but maybe I’ll have to. will need to drop it and move on to something else, allowing me to pay my bills.”

Liam and Ed recently investigated how much time World of Warcraft takes up in your life for the first episode of Inventory Space.

In a statement to computer gamer, MSI confirmed that “economic regulations” had hindered Nicolaychuk’s bank account payments in the past and that it intends to continue developing Afterburner. “MSI is working on a solution and hopes it will be resolved soon,” the statement read.

Afterburner is a great tool. I use it regularly for benchmarking and for my money (£0, free) it’s the best utility out there for easy overclocking GPU. However, like most software, it will need updates to stay useful and safe to use, with support for new graphics cards like Nvidia GeForce RTX 40″ series and AMD Radeon RX 7000 series needs to be added with each launch.

Despite MSI’s optimism, it doesn’t look like such updates are coming any time soon. Jumping to the competition isn’t easy either: Afterburner’s closest competitor, the EVGA Precision X1, also faces an uncertain future after EVGA quits the graphics card business last year. Though at least that’s just due to business disagreements with Nvidia rather than a fight.

Nicolaychuk also clarified that he will continue to work on the RivaTuner Statistics Server (RTSS), another project that is technically separate from MSI Afterburner, although crucial to the overlay feature of the latter.
