Mother banned from driving LIFE after drunkenly stabbed sister to death gets her driver’s license back

A woman banned from driving for life after a drunken crash that killed her sister has had her license returned after claiming she needed it to drive her children around.

Candice Lee Chmieluk was drinking at a Gold Coast surf club with her sister Sammy-Jo, 24, when she was involved in a 4WD accident while exceeding the alcohol limit four times in May 2016.

Last month, Chmieluk applied in Southport District Court to reapply for her license – and on Friday had her request granted by Judge Deborah Holliday.

The judge felt that Chmieluk had exhibited ‘significant changes in character and behavior’ following the tragedy and ‘demonstrated a legitimate intent to obtain a driver’s license.’

Chmieluk has also pledged to be a careful and responsible driver and says she is committed to ‘being that person in general.’

She has also attended counseling sessions and completed courses on traffic and alcohol abuse.

A few weeks before her death, Sammy-Jo Chmieluk had moved to the Gold Coast from her family’s Armidale home in northern NSW.
