More MLB teams should fail like the Angels

Sho' time may be coming to an end.

Sho’s time may be coming end.
Picture: beautiful pictures

The angels died last night. They did the same with Shohei Ohtani on the mound, defeating over 10 players again. That’s what he did. But that doesn’t matter, as the Halos have never scored and lost 2-0 to Rangers. Ohtani has won 10 or more titles in six consecutive starts. The Angels have lost their last two games, though to be fair, Ohtani dropped six runs against the Braves in the previous start. Either way, they’re July 5-16, and once again their truck is in a ditch, and they’re trying to figure out how to get it out and maybe reposition it. next season so it won’t be affected by the road.

Against that backdrop, it was rumored that they wouldn’t at least hang up the phone when the teams called to find out what would happen to get Ohtani to let go of the deal ahead of time. That is almost certainly not going to happen, but there is resignation from Anaheim that they will not be able to entice Ohtani to stay beyond the 2023 season when his contract expires. Because he’s not that young (he’s 28), and well, obviously spending a long time in Orange County is a test for spending a long time in purgatory.

Ohtani himself certainly isn’t committed to staying long, if you read between the very clearly spaced lines of this quote:

He might as well have sung the Wet Leg line: “I don’t even know what I’m doing here, I was told there would be free beer.”

This is the thing, though as bad and incompetent and truly amazing as the Angels did for the whole thing Mike Trout’s career, baseball would be better if more teams fell right on their ass like them. Because it’s not that they haven’t tried. The Angels will pay Anthony Rendon and one of his working wrists – the other made of mache – $38 million next year. Anyway, they signed Ohtani. They signed Pujols. They signed Noah Syndergaard. Trading for David Freese isn’t all that far from a one-time World Series MVP. They splurged a lot from trying to buy a pennant to trying to grow a team from the inside and everything in between.

Does it all make sense? God does not. Is there any of it? Not really. But at least you can argue that it’s all down to desperation to actually do something. To win. Yeah, it’s all just splashing paint that never creates any obvious patterns. But at least they throw crap against the wall.

Do pirates ever throw things at the wall? The Marlins created a collection of young pitches that a lot of teams would envy and then never bother to pair it with any shots. They will lose that pitch before playing any important games. The Nationals players certainly aren’t trying, even though they’re at least halfway through from 2019. What are the Rockies doing? (Editor’s Note: Resume Failed) Blocks? Diamondbacks?

It’s not something to cheer for Angel fans, however many have left at this point, but at least their team as a whole has given them something to talk about over the winter. Something to consider when spring training comes around. Something to dream about in a hot April that will probably be worth the time. Sure, it never was, but at least there was a flicker.

Ohtani will soon be gone, owner Artie Moreno will still be trying to get his shady stadium and real estate deal, and it’s possible Trout will never be Trout again as long as his back is on. His continues to be of interest. They would just fade into the background with most baseball games, becoming part of the scene of the Flying Dutchman, another faceless face.

But you can’t say they haven’t tried. More fans than you think will trade locations.

Failure in Chi-Town

Speaking of Cubs, here’s a good example of how having a ton of money doesn’t mean being nearly as smart:

Just to be clear, this team launched their own channel just as they were getting their team into the damn dirt, and then couldn’t figure out why no one wanted to watch this wreckage. This is how you fall upwards, children.
