Monkeypox given new name by World Health Organisation – disease will now be called ‘mpox’ | World News

Monkeypox has been renamed ‘mpox’ by the World Health Organization.

“Both names will be used simultaneously for a year while ‘monkeypox’ is phased out,” the global body said.

Chickenpox symptoms vary but include rash, fever, chills, swollen lymph nodes, exhaustion, and headache.

Single genital lesions and sores on the mouth or anus have also been identified as viral symptoms by an international collaboration of clinicians across 16 countries.

Some symptoms are so severe that patients need to be hospitalized.

In September, a second strain of chickenpox was detected in the UK after a person who had traveled to West Africa was diagnosed.

In October, leading infectious disease expert Professor Neil Ferguson said the UK looked to be winning the battle against the disease as the number of cases was falling – but he warned against complacency and emphasize the risk of a flare-up again.
