Monfort Labels Labels Graduate Gold Trip “A Warrior” After Winning the Melbourne Cup

Michel Monfort, the man responsible for breeding this year’s Melbourne Gold Cup (Fr) hero, described his graduate as “a warrior”.

Monfort purchased the dam of Gold Trip Sarvana (Fr), a daughter of Dubai Destination, before mating it with Breeders’ Cup winner Juvenile Turf Outstrip (GB), who currently stands in Brazil having spent six seasons prize at Dalham Hall.

The resulting pony turned out to be Gold Trip, who made €60,000 at the Arqana August Sale from Grandcamp to SAS Larrieu Gerard.

Gold Trip won 2nd place in his native France for Fabrice Chappet and changed hands to join Ciaron Maher and David Eustace’s barn in Australia after he finished third behind Broome (Ire) (Australia {GB}) during last year’s G1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud.

But without a doubt the highlight of Gold Trip’s career came when he took a two-stage win in Australia’s most famous race and his breeder supported his continued success.

Monfort said Jour de Galop on Tuesday morning, “He can go on to have a very good career in Europe. He is a warrior. The gold ride won this morning in Australia, especially given the weight he was carrying. It bodes well for the future! “

Back in 2020, Monfort says JDG about his approach to buying Sarvana, recalling how he overlooked her glaring flaws.

He said, “I bought Sarvana almost timidly. She’s not expensive, but she comes from a good Aga Khan family. She is of a stallion, who has proven to be a good stallion.

“These are the criteria that I focused on during that time to buy one mare. I also appreciate that she made it to the race, even though it was only a one-off. “

He added, “She has proven that she has a good enough head and that she does not have any underlying health problems. I envisioned the only beginning that Sarvana had made and she was not flawed. But the big shops, if the horse had no future in the big races, didn’t hesitate to turn the page.”

Sarvana was sold for 280,000 euros to David Redvers representing Sheikh Fahad al Thani in the interim but Monfort’s interest in the family continued as he retained two fillings from the mare.

He added on Tuesday, “We kept two fillings, of which Got Wind (GB) (Olympic Glory {Ire}) won black in two and three. In general, I think if you use mares with snake family, you increase your chances of spawning good horses.

“I also try to get mares from good stallions or good stallions. For a descendant of Mr. Pros Inspector like Sarvana, using stallions from the Danehill line is an interesting option.

“I strongly believe in the ability to excel, as was the case with the Golden Trip. Anyway, that’s my idea. Having a different bloodline is one of the factors that make the children of Dubawi (Ire) successful in Europe today. You can also point to buying Wootton Bassett (GB) by Coolmore. “
