MLB rule changes for 2022 and beyond

Baseball is back! That’s certainly a common sentiment from baseball fans everywhere right now, as spring practice begins in earnest and the regular season lead increases in intensity. While the CBA negotiation is extremely frustrating, with it, the game will undergo a series of changes both on and off the pitch. Let’s take a look at some of them.

This is a rule change that I personally hate, but it seems like I’m in the minority on that. For me, National League play requires significantly more strategy and foresight, while keeping your bench players more engaged. That said, this has been unavoidable for quite some time, and having a DH in NL leads to significantly more job opportunities for veterans who can still swing the stick. but it is difficult to play every day.

Part of the beauty of game 162 in baseball is that the ice cream always rises to the top, and at the end of six months you have the best teams left playing after the season. Baseball has always had the longest schedule and the smallest playoffs, which is why I’m not sure how I feel about extending the post-season. Six teams in each league is certainly better than the federation’s seven-team proposal, but with it comes complications. For starters, baseball players are creatures of habit, and I’m not sure if it’s really helpful to break up the four best teams in the league in round one. But let’s wait and see how this plays out. At least we’re not to the point where nearly half the league is affected like the other three major sports.

This aspect of CBA is certainly new. The retreat from the game is the seven-round doubles that we’ve gone through each of the past two seasons as a way to cut down on time on the pitch. Also, a thing of the past would be the second base runner ghost in the extras….thank god.

Jacob Nottingham isn’t exactly a household name, but he’s here to his very own set of rules! The catcher/first hitter spent most of last season traveling back and forth between Seattle and Milwaukee, as one of them would claim his exemption and the other would claim him. A few days later he will go in the other direction. Hope he earns many frequent flyer miles. In the future, however, the federation has introduced a provision whereby if a team has requested a player be exempted, they cannot do so again unless every other club passes.

Make a draft lottery

This was a key issue for the players during the CBA negotiations, and one that they believed was crucial to tank containment. Starting with the 2023 draft, the first six picks will be determined by draw, and all 18 teams that did not qualify for the post-season will have a chance to enter the lottery. Obviously, the teams finishing with the worst record will have higher odds to win the lottery ticket, (the 18th club only has a 0.23% chance of getting the number one pick), but this will definitely change the strategy for some teams. looking to lose a lot of games and rebuilding through drafts.

He’s another change that will greatly benefit the major league players, especially in the bull leagues. Teams can no longer deliver pain relievers from the ends of their relief crews back and forth at will for six months. Players will only be able to be selected five times per season, after which they will have to be assigned for assignment and supply to all other clubs.

The MLB trade deadline is usually always the last day of July, although it has landed on July 30 and August 1 for a number of recent seasons. However, as part of the latest CBA negotiations, commissioner Rob Manfred received the authority to set a trading deadline from July 28 to August 3. The exact date may vary from year to year, but in theory a later date would give teams more opportunities to determine if they want to buy or sell.

One of the other top players concerns in this negotiation is manipulating service times and they won’t leave the table without something to stop them. This new CBA seems to address that problem pretty aggressively. Clubs can now be rewarded with draft pick compensation if a rookie they shortlisted on inaugural day finishes in the top three in the Rookie of the Year, MVP or Cy Young voting. . Most importantly, however, if a rookie comes in first or second in the Rookie of the Year poll, he will be credited with a full year of service. For example, if Baltimore thinks Adley Rutschman would be legit in the Rookie of the Year conversation, it makes no sense to let him play for the first few weeks in the minor leagues.

This will be very interesting. Thereafter, if the match were all-stars tied after nine innings, instead of going into extra time and potentially pushing the pitchers further away than if they were in an exhibition, the match would be decided by a home derby. This will be fun. Imagine the game being decided by someone like Pete Alonso going to swing with Shohei Ohtani? I am here for it.

This hasn’t gotten enough attention but is a phenomenal addition behind the scenes. Provided at least one player claims it on or before April 15 of a given year, each team will offer English as a Second Language and Spanish as a Second Language courses. for better communication.

Here’s a bit of an interesting wrinkle. As part of a new broadcast deal with NBCUniversal’s Peacock, the streaming service will have exclusives to 18 games – all on Sunday – and plans to start some games as early as 11: 30 am. The games involved will likely be on the East Coast with start times and will start as early to maximize views an hour before the start of some other games.

Oversized base

While all the previously mentioned changes are starting immediately, the rest will start in 2023. The League has been passionate about setting up oversized bases for a number of reasons. In theory, they could prevent injuries around the first base bag, lead to an increase in the number of stolen base attempts, and prevent disappointing results from being awarded on replays after a runner slips through. second base by an eyelash.

The idea of banning change has drawn dramatic comments from both sides of the equation, but it won’t help celebrities. Analytics throughout the game pinpointed where each player hit the ball and adjusted their defense accordingly on a per-hitter basis. Requiring teams to keep two players on the field on each side of the second base bag would increase hit averages and fouls throughout the league, but is it really fair to punish smart clubs? than other clubs with their defensive position?

Promotional Clock

The field clock has been tested at several different levels of organized baseball, and it will eventually appear in the major leagues in 2023. The league is eyeing a 14-second field clock with a stand. drums and 19 seconds with runners on the base . Commissioner Rob Manfred is adamant that this will help improve the tempo of the game, but will it affect the quality of play?

Fundamental changes to the way schedules are built

Fundamental changes to the way schedules are built

This came out last week and it will dramatically change the way baseball is played to date. Alternating play was a novelty when it first launched, and the current schedule format with each team playing each team from an opposite league already works. Starting next season, however, the number of division games each team plays will be significantly reduced, to allow teams to play against all other teams in the sport at least once. It looks like this will detract from tournaments in general a bit, but we’ll have to see how it plays out.
