Mitchell Appointed President of Woodbine Entertainment


Woodbine Entertainment announced on September 16 that its Board of Directors has appointed longtime equestrian executive Hugh Mitchell as Chairman, effective immediately. Mitchell was appointed to the position during Woodbine Entertainment’s annual General Assembly meeting earlier today.

As Chairman of the Board, Mitchell will provide leadership, guidance and governance as Woodbine Entertainment fulfills its mission to maintain and develop horse racing in Ontario. This includes further enhancing racing production at Woodbine and Woodbine Mohawk Park. Mitchell will also play a key role in advancing Woodbine Entertainment’s community plan to develop the surrounding lands at Woodbine Speedway into a world-class entertainment destination while generating revenue streams. new horse racing industry and the 25,000 jobs it supports directly and indirectly throughout the province.

Mitchell, who has been on the Board of Directors of Woodbine Entertainment since 2018, most recently as Chairman and CEO of the Western Fair District in London, Ontario, a position he held from 2009 to 2018. He has also served as Chairman of Woodbine Entertainment’s Standardbred Racing Commission since 2020.

Throughout his successful career, Mitchell has led the equestrian industry in various prominent roles, including Chairman of the U.S. Mining Tracking Board (HTA) and a member cum member. Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Ontario Racing Championship.

Earlier in his career, Mr. Mitchell worked for Woodbine Entertainment as the company’s Senior Vice President of Racing from 1998 to 2005.

Mitchell replaces Christine Magee, who has served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of Woodbine Entertainment since 2020 and as Director since 2015. Magee was appointed Chairman at a critical time when the organization and industry are under management. through a global pandemic and subsequent government restrictions have significantly impacted the organization, its employees and the Ontario equestrian industry and the tens of thousands of jobs it supports across the province.

With a firm hand, Christine’s leadership and stewardship have been instrumental in helping manage and navigate the impacts of the pandemic, Lawson said. “Her guidance also helped put us in a stable position during volatile times to ensure we were well positioned to grow and transform as our organization and industry emerge after the first two years of the pandemic.
