Mile of Shirl’s Speight Upsets Maker’s

Defeated 9-1 despite entering a two-race winning streak, ‘Rising star TDN’ Shirl’s Sight (Sightstown) sling-shot got his first top score in GI Maker’s Mile S. Keeneland Friday Afternoon.

Off the field in good form, the Fipke mixed-dog earned his time in last second place, running off the fence, as a GI Shoemaker Mile winner and eventually as GI runner-up. Breeders ‘Cup Mile Smooth as the strait (Midnight Lute) orthographic terms, giving early splits as: 24.95 and: 49.63. A little more on the backstretch, Shirl’s Speight still has a lot of work to do at the top of the lane as Smooth Like Straight bravely tried to fend off the favored Juddmonte import. Mason (GB) (King {GB}). Racing in the center of the track, Shirl’s Speight unleashed an angry, land-gobbling rally late to beat Masen (GB) on track.

Winning coach Roger Attfield said: “He lost his way there after winning his first two starts. “He was a very fast horse and he won those races with ease. He didn’t really gain any experience from it. And then he had suspension issues and we took him for a while – quite a while – and I appreciate Mr. Fipke giving him that time. They need it when they have that kind of injury.”

He continued, “We got him back and he ran really well for me. In his last race, he stopped and came in for a big run, and I realized that’s probably how this horse really wants to run. So when I saw him 50-1 on the light line, I said, ‘I can’t be that wrong.’ I won this race with his grandfather [broodmare sire Perfect Soul (Ire) in 2004], and this is a nicer thing than him. There is a lot of speed in the race and [Luis] Saez gave him a great ride. He let him do it and he went down really fast, didn’t he? I don’t know if he can or not. ”

“I was watching the replays and Roger called me,” Saez said. “He said the best way was to come from the back, so I decided to bring him in as soon as we broke up. It seemed like the best decision to make. Finally, he arrived. He ran pretty hard and got there in time.”

Follow him ‘Rising star TDN’– A well-deserved debut win at GIII Marine S. 2020, Shirl’s Speight has been knocked out of the table in his two starts in 2021, the first being in the main sprint at Gulfstream in September.
