Via Dan Ambrose: Mikey Garcia is currently listing himself as retired on his Instagram page, eight months after his death Sandor Martin in October last year.
With just three games in the past four years, it’s no surprise that former four-category world champion Mikey (40-2, 30 KOs) has chosen to walk away.
If retirement comes to an end, Mikey will end his 16-year professional career on a sad note, leaving after his defeat to lightweight rival Sandor Martin last October.
After Mikey’s one-sided loss to IBF welterweight champion Errol Spence Jr in March 2019, he’s only fought twice, beating Jessie Vargas and losing to Sandor Martin.
34-year-old Mikey looked underwhelming in both matches, as he wasn’t close enough to dominate those guys with his brute strength as he did against his foes at 126, 130 & 135.
“Mikey Garcia, Person of the Public. Retire World Champ 126, 130, 135, 140 lbs, ”Mikey listed Instagram Story.
It’s a pity that Mikey has chosen to retire now because he can do so much more in the sport if he makes the right moves.
With a good dietitian and an exercise program, Mikey can quickly get back to the 135-lb and put himself in position for a big money fight against Gervonta ‘Tank’ DavisDevin Haney, or Ryan Garcia.
Leaving 135 lb for promotion to 147 in 2019 was a big mistake for Mikey because he was too small to compete in the welterweight division.
Likewise, 140 was too big for Mikey, and it was a big mistake on his part when facing slick Sandor Martin. It’s not the type of guy you want to fight, while boxing is a part-time hobby.
Mikey would need to give up fast food to make 135, but it’s entirely possible if he’s ambitious enough to do it. Also, instead of focusing too much time on his expensive cars, Mikey needs to go to the gym and pretend he’s not rich.
Some boxing fans claim that Mikey’s mind hasn’t been on the sport since his big payday pre-Spence in 2019. Mikey made a ton of money from his fights with Spence and has since weight gain.
In several videos of Mikey since his defeat to Spence, we see him show off his expensive cars, eat out, and don’t seem too interested in getting back into the mix.
Mikey has talked about fighting Manny Pacquiao, but the Filipino star chose to face WBA welterweight champion Yordenis Ugas last year. That’s no surprise Pacquiao has gone in that direction because Mikey hasn’t done anything with his career since 2018.
Mikey’s career victories:
- Orlando Salido
- Robert Easter Jr
- Sergey Lipinets
- Dejan Zlaticanin
- Adrien Broner
- Roman Martinez
- Rafael Guzman
