Microsoft Office will be renamed to Microsoft 365, changes will take effect next month

Microsoft renamed its Office 365 service to Microsoft 365 in April 2020, in an effort to make using the service more than just a work application. Microsoft will now remove the remaining Office branding from Word, Excel, PowerPoint and other apps, according to the company’s FAQ page. Users can now access Microsoft’s Office applications at Office.com. However, with Microsoft’s latest announcement, this will be carried over to Microsoft365.com. As part of the rebranding, Microsoft also introduced a hexagonal icon that replaces the current square icon.

According to the company Frequently asked questions page, the changes will go into effect starting next month, while the rebranded Office apps for Windows, MacOS, iOS, and Android will go into effect in January. Microsoft will also release a centralized Microsoft 365 app on mobile and desktop devices, which will act as a single source hub for information, meetings, files, and documents. The centralized app will also display a feed of relevant peers that the user can connect with.

However, the extension names of applications such as Are from, Excel, PowerPoint, Team, Opinion, Clipchamps, Currentand Designer will remain the same, confirmed the company’s FAQ page.

Microsoft was also informed that no changes would be made to “Office 365 subscriptions”. The Office branding will remain on one-time purchases made by users through Office 2021, and Office LTSC is being offered on volume licensing models.

“In the coming months, Office.com, the Office mobile app, and the Office app for Windows will become Microsoft 365 apps, with new icons, new look and even more features,” the Microsoft FAQ states.

The move marks the first major branding change to the suite of productivity apps offered by Microsoft in its more than 30 years of existence.

The old Microsoft Office will now reflect as a legacy Microsoft brand, meaning the newly announced features will come to Microsoft 365 and not Microsoft Office, according to a new report. report by The Verge, who first discovered the rebranding.
