Microsoft Bing Generative Search: How it Works with LLM and SLM

Microsoft explains that if you search for, say, a movie genre, the AI-generated summary will include subgenres, history, origins, and some of the top movies made. This is further enhanced by the availability of links and sources of information. Additionally, if a user wants to see regular search results, they are always available.

What’s even more interesting is that Microsoft is using both the Large Language Model and the Small Language Model (SLM) in parallel with Search Results to create these summaries.

Microsoft also claims that the AI can understand search queries, then look at “millions of information sources, dynamically match content, and generate search results in a new AI-generated layout” to ultimately deliver better results to users.

No Impact on Website Traffic, Supporting a ‘Healthy Web Ecosystem’: Microsoft

There is no denying that AI-powered search has become a subject of widespread criticism following Googlein May, faced a backlash for allegedly misleading users with inaccurate information. So launching its own version was quite a task for Microsoft. But, as things stand, Microsoft has tried to address this by including links to sources, something that Google is now also doing.

Microsoft is also limiting the use of Bing Generative AI search, temporarily allowing only a small number of users to query out of an abundance of caution.

Another big concern with AI search is the impact it will have on traffic, as there is less incentive to visit actual websites if users can get all the information on the results page. The software giant says it is working closely to examine how search affects traffic for publishers. Based on what has been seen so far, AI search is generating a sustained amount of traffic. Meanwhile, it is also designed to retain traditional search results, as well as increase clickable links.
