Michelle Rodriguez doesn’t want to resurrect her Avatar character in a sequel

Michelle Rodriguez has said she is not interested in returning to reprise her Avatar character, Trudy, in a futuristic sci-fi series. Talking to Vanity FairRodriguez said director James Cameron told her he was thinking of bringing Rodriguez back to the Avatar series, but she won’t be playing Trudy anymore.

Trudy, a pilot who helped the Na’vi in battle by sacrificing himself, heroically sacrificed himself at the end of the original 2009 Avatar. Rodriguez said she told Cameron about the possibility of resurrecting Trudy, “You can’t do that – I died a martyr, Jim.”

Rodriguez has been down this road before. She said that her characters in Resident Evil and Machete had returned in the later seasons after they were not allowed to do so and that she did not want to do it again.

“That would be overkill!” she speaks (through diversity). “I don’t get it, that’s weird. I guess they don’t know what to do with the girl who doesn’t have a boyfriend. ‘She doesn’t have a boyfriend. Should we keep her alive or kill her?'”

It’s unclear if Cameron has hinted that Rodriguez is returning to Avatar to play Trudy again or another character, which wouldn’t be uncharted territory for the sci-fi series. After all, Sigourney Weaver’s character, Dr. Grace Augustine, died in the original film. Weaver played a Na’vi girl named Kiri in The Way of Water, leading some to believe that Kiri might be the reincarnated Dr. Grace. However, that question remains unanswered.

Avatar and The Way of Water came in at number one and three as the highest-grossing films of all time. Avatar 3 will be released in December 2024, with evil Na’vi character for the first time. “I wanted to show the Na’vi from a different angle because so far, I’ve only shown their good sides,” Cameron said.

As for Rodriguez, she will appear next in Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, which hits theaters this weekend.
