The Maryland Horse Breeders Association (MHBA) has announced the creation of a care account that will then transfer funds to support Maryland stallions as they retire and prepare for their second career. me.

The account, called BackStop, will be funded by deducting a $25 fee from each Maryland-bred subscription submitted. BackStop funds will not replace or relieve owners, breeders or trainers of the responsibility of their retirement arrangements. Funds will be dispersed on an available basis up to $2,000 and will be used as additional support for a specific use or support for an individual or group receiving, retraining. or rebuild Maryland-registered Purebreds.

“We are committed to working with people dedicated to giving these Maryland hybrids a fresh start and safe landing,” said Cricket Goodall, chief executive officer of MHBA. of the MHBA. “We know that breeders and owners want the best for their horses. This fund will be provided for a specific use benefiting Maryland stallions in need.”

Alice Peirce, manager of Mantua Farms in Reisterstown and a member of the MHBA Aftercare Committee added: “People can come into this area or lead a horse they probably wouldn’t be able to, so so I think it’s great. I often lose on horses where I have to rehab, and that’s okay because this is what I love to do, but I understand that not everyone can do it. I know many others in my field who would be able to look at more horses this way. “

BackStop funds are not used for capital or expense improvements that are not specific to the horse named in the application. BackStop, the MHBA aftercare account, will not be a substitute for funds or other assistance received from TAA, TRF, TCA, Beyond the Wire or any other applied care plan.
