Mexico Named Deadliest Country for Environmental Activists

“Nothing has progressed: he’s dead, they killed him, but who gave the order to kill him?” he say. “It’s frustrating.”

Sometimes environmentalists simply disappear. In the Yaqui community alone, eight people went missing last year, and if they are the victims of murder, finding them can be very difficult. Bodies are often concealed or destroyed, leaving little evidence of crime. This practice is called forced disappearance, and in Mexico it is common: More than 100,000 people is considered to have disappeared since 1964, according to government figures.

Global Witness has documented 19 forced disappearances of land rights activists in Mexico in 2021, including Irma Galindo Barrios, an environmentalist who has faced threats from officials local organization for forest protection work in the southern state of Oaxaca. She is missing October last year and has not been seen since.

The violence continued this year. In March, an indigenous environmental activist, José Trinidad Baldenegro, were killed in the northern state of Chihuahua. his brother, Isidro Baldenegro, a renowned environmentalist, was murdered in 2017.

Despite the dangers, many environmentalists remain committed to conserving their land and resources.

Yaqui activist Jiménez said: “From the time you were a kid, they taught you that you have to fight for the rights of the tribe, the water, the land. “We continue to go with the people who are the people who make us strong.”
