Meta commits an extra $150 million to its Supervisory Board

Meta committed to keep it Management operated by providing ongoing financial support. Companies have commit to fund the operation of the board with an additional $150 million contribution. Previous Meta spend 130 million dollars because of the trust of the board when it was established in 2019.

The Oversight Board said the funds, which are not recoverable under the trust’s terms, can only be used to fund, manage and oversee its operations. “By making this ongoing financial commitment, Meta has placed a vote of confidence on the board’s work and its efforts to adopt Facebook and Instagram content standards. in a way that protects freedom of expression and appropriate human rights standards,” said Oversight Board Trust chairman Stephen Neal.

The Oversight Board reviews certain content moderation decisions made by Facebook and Instagram and provide recommendations to Meta. Through the lens of human rights standards, it also evaluates Meta’s policies and how it enforces them. The council says it has received more than a million complaints from users against censorship decisions. To date, it has issued 25 binding decisions on cases and made 118 policy recommendations, and raised many questions about Meta’s practices.

The board began making decisions on the cases in January 2021, and it wasn’t long before a major case fell into the spotlight: Meta’s decision to suspend Donald Trump unlimited from its platforms following the events of January 6, 2021. Board of Directors finally determined that Meta was “reasonable” in stopping Trump, but argued that its rationale for the indefinite ban meant that suspending Trump for an indefinite period was not within the company’s jurisdiction. . Therefore, Meta has limited the suspension up to two years.

The Board of Supervisors has been so influential on other Meta moderation decisions and policies that the company says can’t keep up with all the suggestions. Among other things, Meta has added an exception for satire by its community standards, clarify its rules about hate speech and strengthen anti-doxxing policies. Meanwhile, the board has criticized Meta on other fronts, such as lack of transparency through VIP moderation rules.
