Merwin Tan wins regional bowling title in US tilt
MANILA, Philippines—Southeast Asian Games Champion Merwin Tan brought his action to the United States and ran a fierce competition featuring the best pitchers there planet.
22-year-old Tan hit the 216 mark in the final of the Professional pitchers’ Bowlers Academy Open in Clovis, California on Monday, defeating popular PJ Haggerty to win the men’s singles title.
Haggerty, a professional U.S. touring athlete from Roseville, California, hit the 203 mark in his championship match against Tan at Bowling Bowlero Center after surviving Dupree Dickie of Oakland, California in the semifinals.
With the guidance of foreign coach Joe Slowinski all the way, Tan made it through three quarterfinals with ease by beating Nickolas Freiberg of Sparks, Nevada, 258-188, 236-243, 248- 190, and overcame the counterattack of Brandon Kring of Nevada, 222-214, 213-218, 247-209, into the semifinals.
Patrick Nuqui, Tan’s gold medal-winning teammate of four at the SEA Games in Vietnam last year, finished 10th out of 74 competitors.
Tan broke an 11-year drought for the Philippines in the SEA Games after winning the men’s singles event of Vietnam. He joined forces with Nuqui, Christian Dychangco and Ivan Dominic Malig in a winning team of four.
