Mercedes EQS SUV begins production in Alabama
Mercedes’ EQS sedan is fantastic. It has an incredible interior, great performance and build quality that should make Fremont car builders openly cry. Of course, bullet-shaped sedans aren’t everyone’s cup of tea, and for those, Mercedes is making an SUV version, which has just begun production in Alabama, according to an announcement by the company. Mercedes on Friday.
Yes, EQS SUV – that we’ve known about for a while – under construction at Benz’s Tuscaloosa Factory, which has produced most of its SUVs since the 1990s. It will also be the first EV to appear there, but it won’t be the last. Mercedes already has plans to build a smaller, more affordable EQE SUV there, and there may even be a Maybach SUV EV somewhere in the factory’s future.
Mercedes’ plans to produce electric vehicles in the US are also not exactly the same, at the last minute. The company has a battery manufacturing facility in nearby Bibb County, which opened in March. This proximity will make production easier and cheaper, and that’s always good.
Mercedes expects to bring the EQS SUV to dealers sometime before the end of 2022, with prices somewhere just north of where the EQS sedan starts (around $103,360 for the base Premium version). Range is estimated to peak at 373 miles and power output reaches 536 on the top-end 580 model.
