Mercedes EQB, GLB to launch tomorrow: Price expectations

Mercedes-Benz is getting ready to launch the EQB electric SUV and the ICE GLB version in India tomorrow (December 2). The recently launched 12th and 13th SUVs of the German automaker offer electric, petrol and diesel options on the same model. This is the first time for Mercedes to offer a model with multiple such powertrains. What’s more promising is that both models are likely to be heavily priced to offer more affordable options in the luxury SUV segment.

Both the EQB and GLB are seven-seat models with three rows of seats. Both will help Mercedes have the largest SUV portfolio in the luxury car segment in India with 13 models on offer. The EQB will be the first three-row model to be launched in the luxury electric vehicle segment in India. The GLB will be the second German three-row model after the GLS. However, the EQB and GLB are much more compact in size than the GLS.

The EQB will be Germany’s fourth electric vehicle in India. It will be delivered with EQC, EQS and EQS AMG in the Indian market. The Mercedes EQB has a 66.5 kWh battery core, which is smaller than the 80 kWh battery pack inside the EQC. It still manages to deliver a claimed range of around 420 km. EQB can produce a maximum capacity of 225 horsepower and maximum torque of 390 Nm. It has a top speed of 160 km/h and can go from 0 to 100 km/h in about 8 seconds.

The GLB will be offered in both petrol and diesel engines. The 1.3-litre petrol engine under the hood is derived from other Mercedes models such as the A-Class and GLA. It can produce 163 horsepower and maximum torque of 250 Nm. The 2.0-litre diesel engine is offered in two variants, one of which is the AMG Line. It produces 190 hp and 400 Nm of torque.

With GLB and EQB, Mercedes aims to exploit the mid-luxury segment $60 thousand and $1 core. The price of GLB is expected to fluctuate between $650,000 and $70 lakh (old gallery) while EQB can cost around $80 lakh (old gallery). The EQB is also likely to become the most affordable German electric car in India since the EQC.
