Mercedes-Benz AMG, long known for its V-8 and V-12 engines, is on its way towards an electric future, a preview of which will arrive earlier this week with the reveal of the Vision AMG concept.
Mercedes design chief Gordon Wagener on Monday posted a rough sketch of the concept on social media and confirmed the reveal on May 19.
The trailer shows a sports car with a slippery shape resembling Mercedes ‘Vision EQXX’ The electric sedan concept car last month covered 626 miles on a single charge during a demonstration that ran from Germany to the south of France.
Mercedes Vision EQXX EV concept
While the Vision EQXX is not intended for production, it is rumored that we could see an electric sports car like the Vision AMG coming around 2025. That year will be pivotal as this is when Mercedes permanently switch to the electric platform, starting with three very versatile designs That would bring the carmaker to an end of the transition to an EV-only state, which is currently planned for 2030. Platforms will include MB.EA for midsize and large Mercedes models, the Van .EA for light commercial vehicles and AMG .EA for AMG performance models.
AMG has extensive experience in electric power. Recall, it first tested the waters in 2014 with the SLS AMG Electric Drive. It was the fastest, most powerful EV on the market at the time thanks to 740 hp. Since then, AMG has gathered more experience, particularly in the areas of discharge and energy recovery, from its Formula One programme. It also recently acquired electric motor specialist Yasa, a company known for its axial flux motors that offer high power and low weight characteristics.
Some of these experiences have benefited AMG versions of EQE sedan and EQS hatchback, the company’s first set of EVs. Also in the pipeline is an AMG version of the EQE SUV coming soon.
