Menstruation benefit: Kerala university announces attendance relief | India News
KOCHI: Girls in Cochin University of Science and Technology (Cusat) could claim an additional 2% stipend for non-attendance each semester under a “menstrual allowance” – a move rarely seen at an institute of higher education in Kerala.
The Cusat rules mandate that 75% of the attendees each semester appear for the exams. The new order will bring that threshold down to 73%.
Wednesday’s order meets the long-awaited demand of more than 4,000 female students in various directions, including PhDs, at Cusat. student union president Namitha George expressed joy, calling it a “much needed” decision. Student unions have asked for a fixed amount of “menstrual leave” each semester, but authorities cited “practical difficulties” in granting such relief and instead recommended accepting recognize the shortage of people going to school. This was accepted by the unions.
