Memphis Grizzlies broadcasters give referees an earful

There is an allure to a local sports broadcast. Sports are about energy and passion, and one way to draw that from fans is with event MCs.

While the local broadcaster group is clearly biased, MSNBC is more than Fox News. Their job is not to paint themselves with the colors of the team and lead chants of “de-fense”, but to serve the fans who have watched the local team play. So when something goes wrong, the local sports broadcaster is there to sense it with viewers.

On Wednesday night, Grizzlies broadcasters Pete Prancia and Brevin Knight voiced the skepticism of basketball fans from eastern Arkansas to Northern Mississippi in the Memphis Grizzlies’ 124-122 extra-time win over San Jose. Antonio Spurs.

With 19.7 seconds remaining in extra time, the Grizzlies took a 123-118 lead as Jakob Poeltl secured a rebound. Spurs started running, but the clock didn’t. It remained at 19.7 when Spurs scored. Things didn’t start again until the confused Grizzlies tried to hit the ball and it was robbed by Jeremy Sochan and their lead was down to just one point.

It was at this point that Prancia and Knight put on a performance that wowed Ken “Hawk” Harrleson and Tommy Heinson. Prancia doesn’t scream at all about the indefinite possession except repeating, “The clock doesn’t start! … The clock doesn’t start!” Both were so angry with the referee that at one point, they stopped broadcasting. After the rotation and scoring, the umpires stopped the game and went to the umpire’s table to try and see what happened.

Later, as the judges were huddled together, Prancia and Knight took off their headphones (screaming at the production team for showing the scene live on camera) and explained to the zebras what had happened. . The referees were making eye contact with a local television team, listening to them as if they were playback officials in Secaucus, NJ Knight was so frustrated that he didn’t put his headphones back on during for almost a minute, as he stared at the referees so much that it looked like he was trying to make them fly with his mind.

In the end, Spurs kept the score but they decided that the game would have 9.3 seconds left. The Grizzlies were going to win, so Ja Morant was able to laugh out loud while watching the interactive clip of the announcers with the referee.

If I’m a Grizzlies fan, that’s the energy I need from my broadcast team. While I’m not a Grizzlies fan, Prancia and Knight’s reactions still make the viewing experience exponentially more enjoyable. Go ahead, tear off the headphones. I don’t need you to talk to me right now, no action. Ask the whistlers to run the game correctly.

Raw emotions, that’s why sports make so much money.

Jeff Van Gundy could have talked about how he was annoyed with timekeeping in the NBA since he was an assistant to the New York Knicks if he was on the broadcast, but it wouldn’t be worth it. such trust. He kept rising. It’s something to look forward to when he’s calling a game, and those plaudits are one reason why he’s on ESPN’s top NBA broadcast team.

Prancia and Knight acted as if someone had taken their headphones and ran off with them. They have two parts equally startling and indignant, and it’s caught on the broadcast. A perfect response to such an unusual event.

A great example of why local broadcasters are important. Sometimes you just need someone – using the right language for the job, of course – to scream in front of an entire metropolitan area what you just did on your TV.
