Members of the public chase and detain man after coffee shop stabbing on London’s Edgware Road | UK News
Members of the public have chased and arrested a man after a woman was stabbed in a cafe in central London.
The suspect was arrested on suspicion of bodily harm following the incident on Edgware Road on Thursday morning.
A woman in her 30s was given first aid at the scene and taken to hospital.
Police said they were awaiting an assessment of her condition and believe the couple knew each other.
Officers with guns were deployed but no shots were fired.
A shop owner across the street, Omar Awada, said a group of men chased and beat the suspected attacker and held him before police arrived.
Mr Awada, 47, said: “He tried to run away but the locals caught him and they beat him until the police arrived.
“It’s like Tom and Jerry, they’re on the right and on the left…”
One man, who is said to have knocked down the attacker with a bicycle, was described as a “hero” by one witness.
The witness said: “We heard screams, we came out, the guy with the knife, was stabbing the woman repeatedly, maybe five or six times.
“Maybe 30 people or 40 people were chasing him. They used whatever they had to stop him.
“When people chased him, he tried to run away and scared everyone with a knife, but we had a hero who put him on the ground. He stabbed him with his bike. “
A siege has been established around Maison Du Sultan and a nearby Costa, with police officers guarding the scene as forensics officers investigate and take photographs.
A shisha straw lay on the floor outside the business door, and chairs and tables were also knocked over.
