Punk spoke his truth about AEW’s culture, but he helped fuel whatever fire existed. He was the arsonist trying to blame others for the fire. Elite is not innocent in this situation either. What do they think will happen to them? Aggressively approaching a clearly marked Punk who has very little time to cool down? Punk was furious about Page and Young Bucks saying extreme things in the media. However, here he sprayed vitriol directly to reporters. Punk’s lack of self-awareness is astounding.
I don’t think I’m overstating this to claim how AEW overcoming this adversity will give the company a voice going forward, and may burn it for a long time if peace is not made between the giant egos that reside with its biggest stars. If Steel’s actions are found to be correct, he should be fired. Throwing a steel chair at someone’s head can be deadly. And what reason does AEW have to keep him? Because he was in Ring of Honor’s Second City Saints settled with Punk and Cabana? Do not shoot.
Punk deserves a chance for major modification, if he wishes. Going from a world championship on Sunday to being unemployed within a week is bad form. Publicizing co-worker trash as a narcissist is also a work acumen. Depending on how active the remaining people are involved, different types of suspensions should be eliminated. The biggest thing that needs to change about AEW from this incident is the culture of how Punk and Elite think they can act unprofessionally. Khan needs to regain control of his squad by sending a clear message from this incident.
If there’s a way forward to turn this into a storyline, AEW has to do it. There is unparalleled interest in the company because of the chaos. Matt Hardy and MJF are two examples of wrestlers used individual vendors to enhance the professional storyline. All involved would be foolish not to take advantage of it. Currently, Punk, Elite and Khan are wrapped in a completely opposite scenario.
