McDonalds boss from Albany WA offers $1,000 sign-in bonus to new regular or full-time employees


A McDonald’s owner advertised a $1,000 bonus for new employees, whether regular, part-time, or full-time as he tries to cover an employee shortage.

Darren Tyrrell, owner of a McDonald’s in Albany, Western Australia’s southernmost tip, said he has struggled to find workers while many of his staff have been laid off due to Covid-19.

Mr Tyrrell told PerthNow: “Like most other businesses in town, we had some difficulty finding people.

‘We want to attract really good quality candidates, especially for the day team.’

The bonus will be paid out into $100 weekly installments for 10 weeks after the employee starts working, he added.

Roles range from bartending to day and night shifts, with full-time, part-time, and casual roles.

“It’s only been going on for about a week and we’ve definitely seen an increase in applications, but we really encourage people in the remaining two weeks to apply for a great job,” said Mr. Tyrrell. great at Maccas.

He said the bonus offer was driven by a devastating wave of Covid infections in Western Australia in May, when dozens of his staff were unable to work – 26 of whom were affected by the disease along with a time.

The workers either got sick, were in close contact or were in isolation, waiting for the results, forcing the 24-hour store to close overnight.

Since then, staff levels have improved but not where it should be, according to Mr. Tyrrell.

It comes after the Western Australian Government introduced legislation to state parliaments in May to ensure specific Covid-19 restrictions can be maintained.

The new laws cover a range of directions including a seven-day quarantine requirement for Covid cases and the use of masks for close contacts.

These restrictions hurt employers as they struggle to keep their businesses afloat while employees are unwell.

Albany McDonald’s isn’t the only restaurant reaching out to workers offering big pay packages.

A chicken shop in South Hedland and a coffee shop in Broome recently offered potential employees annual salaries of up to $130,000 and $92,000, respectively.
