The Mazda CX-30 is undeniably a well-made premium compact SUV. In fact, the interior build quality surpasses the majority of its main rivals. This, combined with the prevailing SUV body style and record-high Euro NCAP crash test scores for adult protection, could make the CX-30 one of Mazda’s best-selling models. .

It’s not perfect, mind, with rivals like Skoda Karoq and Peugeot 3008 promises more in terms of practicality and wider drive range. Even so, Mazda’s compact SUV still packs cutting-edge engine technology and a great ride feel – the latter quality is something some SUVs and crossovers offer. All things considered, the CX-30 makes a compelling case for itself.

About Mazda CX-30

As the first model of its kind, Mazda’s CX-30 doesn’t have a long history of competent predecessors to look back on. That said, the Japanese marque’s lineup isn’t considered to have any flaws, and the CX-30 shares some of the technology seen in its impressively stable lineup.

There is only one body style for the CX-30 and that is the five-door model SUV shape. Furthermore, there are five core trims to choose from; SE-L, SE-L Lux, Sport Lux, GT Sport and GT Sport Tech, with cheaper Edition versions of both GT models also offered (standard Bose sound system not included).

Powerful equipment in the range, with conveniences like air conditioning and cruise control standard on all. As for the engine, only two petrol units are available. One Mazda call “Skyactiv-G” with 120bhp and the other “Skyactiv-X” offers 183bhp.

Both of these engines feature mild hybrid but it is only the second system using Mazda’s innovative compression ignition system (more on that later). Unlike with some rivals, all trim levels and engines are available with a manual or automatic gearbox, while the more powerful 183-hp models come with front- or all-wheel drive.

Mazda isn’t known for making out-of-the-box performance versions of its entry-level cars, and even the versions it has done are by no means unassuming and forgettable – few are likely to develop them. shows an MPS version of the second generation Mazda 3 on the road. Instead, the Japanese automaker ensures its standard models have a good appeal to drivers, and the CX-30 is no exception.

If there’s one thing the CX-30 can do with bucket loads, it’s the competition. Midsize SUVs and crossovers seem to appear more frequently than the site’s requests to accept cookies. At one end of the scale, there are more premium alternatives like Mercedes GLA, Audi Q2 and Lexus UX. While at the other end, there are less attractive opponents like Vauxhall Grandland and Honda CR-VA.

The cars the CX-30 really has to beat are class leaders, including Skoda Karoq, SEAT Ateca and Peugeot 3008. Overall, Mazda’s pricing structure allows it to compete with most of its rivals, although some German rivals can easily outpace the price point of the flagship CX-30.
