Via Dan Ambrose: Today, Floyd Mayweather Jr tore the net of Canelo Alvarez as he knocked out David Benavidez, his 168 lb WBC mandatory opponent.
Mayweather didn’t like Canelo’s weak excuse for not fighting the undefeated Benavidez (26-0, 23 KOs), saying he didn’t want to fight any Mexican boxers.
Mayweather doesn’t buy that excuse, as he points out that Canelo made a career out of beating the Mexican boxer.
So why is it that all of a sudden, when faced with a dangerous fight against the ‘Mexican Monster’ Benavidez, is Canelo saying he doesn’t want to fight the Mexican warriors?
Mayweather said if black boxers adopted the same policy, boxing fans wouldn’t see the best fighting as the best because, in Floyd’s view, “the greatest boxers are black people.”
It’s clear in the eyes of fans that Canelo is avoiding Benavidez like a plague because he doesn’t want to be humiliated by him in a knockout loss.
Canelo losing decisively to Dmitry Bivol and Mayweather is one thing, but being knocked out by Benavidez is quite another.
“Just as a promoter, I am not racist. I have no racism in my body,” Floryd Mayweather Jr told Fighthype. “When I go out and stand behind so many young boxers from the struggle.
“It doesn’t matter where they come from. They could be from Mexico or anywhere. I just want to help boxers accomplish what they want to achieve in the sport of boxing.
“You have to realize that Crawford, like Spence, are two hells of one boxer. It would be wrong if they pulled a Canelo. He said, ‘I don’t want to fight with no Mexican boxers.’
“Canelo made his career beating Mexican boxers, but now he says he doesn’t want to join the war of Benavidez. He’s talking about not wanting to fight Mexican boxers. It’s a way to retreat blocks.
“If it is and Canelo is saying it and everyone is standing behind Canelo, then all the black warriors out there are probably saying, ‘You know what? We will not fight each other. ‘
“You know why black boxers can’t say that? Because they say, ‘The best must fight the best. The greats have to fight the greats, right? All the best and greatest warriors are blackMayweather said.
