Vanity Fair: What do you remember about the first time you met?
Nicholas Hoult: Surely this is a screen test for About a boy.
Hugh Grant: Yeah, maybe so baby.
Hoult: “Maybe so dear?”
Grant: That’s what I said.
Hoult: It’s been a while since you called me “sweetie”. [Laughs] I actually don’t remember the screen test part at all, because I think when I’m in a high-stress situation, I kind of panic and don’t understand anything that’s going on. So I don’t have any memories of that other than I know that I had to wear a school uniform, but I didn’t go to a school with a uniform at that time. So I borrowed my mom’s old boat shoes but we used markers to draw them. I remember looking down during the audition and seeing that the ink we used to draw the shoes was smeared on the white socks I was wearing. And I thought, wow, this is a disaster.
