Max Scherzer reveals why he thinks PitchCom should be ‘illegal’

MLB introduced its new PitchCom system for use this season, typically to prevent sign theft between catchers and pitchers during games. The technology has been popular in general, but the New York Mets ace Max Scherzer is not a fan.

Scherzer used PitchCom for the first time in Wednesday’s game against the New York Yankees. The veteran said the technology worked well and was useful, but he nonetheless felt it was “illegal”.

“It works. Is it useful? Right. But I also think it must be illegal,” said Scherzer, via Justin Tasch of the New York Post. “I don’t think it should be in the game.

“For me, I’ve always prided myself on having a complex signage system and having an edge over other pitchers,” Scherzer continued. “The reality is we’re taking this out of the game and we’re just bringing in the technology, now everybody – you can’t steal signs right second, pitchers can’t have an advantage when has a complex system. It’s part of baseball trying to crack someone’s cues. Does it have the desired purpose of cleaning up the game a bit? Yes, but I also feel like it takes away part of the game.”

Basically, Scherzer said he’s good at combining his signs, so having PitchCom somewhat negates the advantage it gives him. To be fair, but in the wake of the Houston Astros scandal, some precautions had to be taken at the league level.

PitchCom its not without its problems, but it seems to be a pure positive number. Scherzer will simply have to adapt, and it looks like he’s doing it.
