Mavericks Trade Kristaps Porzingis to Wizards

The Mavericks and Wizards have agreed to a big deal, according to a report from The Athletic’s Shams Charania and Marc Stein (Twitter

Big man Kristaps Porzingis According to Stein, will head to Washington in the deal, while Dallas will receive points of protection Spencer Dinwiddie, according to Charania. Tim MacMahon of ESPN reports (via Twitter) which Mavs is also getting sharp finder Davis Bertanswhile ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski said (via Twitter) that the Wizards are getting selected in the second round.

Mavs will release the big guy Moses Brown to complete the transaction, tweets MacMahon.

According to Stein (via Twitter), the Mavs spent most of the day on Thursday trying to find a home for Porzingis, who previously link to the Raptors. Dallas gave up a substantial package in 2019 to buy Porzingis from the Knicks, but he’s continued to battle health problems in the years since and hasn’t grown into a running star for Luka Doncic that Mav envisioned. He also owes nearly $70 million in the two years following this season.

This season, Porzingis is averaging 19.2 PPG and 7.7 RPG while playing defensively, but his three points drop to a career-worst 28.3% and he’s just fine strong in 34 out of 55 games. Dallas has a 13-8 record in games he’s missed.

The Wizards, who were retooling their formation around Bradley Beal, will roll the dice on Porzingis, hoping he’s more successful in DC than in Dallas. They will give up Dinwiddie and Bertans, two players who have struggled badly this season amid expensive contracts for years.

Dinwiddie, 28, signed a three-year contract with the Wizards during the off-season, but shot just 37.6 percent off the ground in his first season back from ACL surgery. Like Josh Robbins of The Athletic tweetsDinwiddie never seemed comfortable in Washington’s offensive behavior without the ball in hand, which happened a lot when he played alongside Beal.

Meanwhile, Bertans is in the second season of a five-year, $80 million contract, but has seen his three-pointer drop off the cliff in 2021-22. A three-pointer hitting 40.7% of his career heading into the season, the 29-year-old forward has only completed 31.9% of his attempts from outside the arc this year.

The Mavericks will be hoping that both players, who have had much success in the past, can return to Dallas. Dinwiddie will provide the team with another serve when Doncic and/or Jalen Brunson not on the field, while Bertans will provide another floor pad to give Doncic more room to work.

As ESPN’s Bobby Marks notes (via Twitter), Dinwiddie will provide the Mavs with some insurance in the event they are unable to re-sign Brunson in unrestricted free agency this summer. However, sources told MacMahon (Twitter link) that Dallas remains confident in its ability to retain Brunson after this season.
